"Your child has Autism."
When parents hear these words they may:
not know what it is;
have an antiquated idea of rocking, silent children;
think to themselves that it's that "thing" affecting children that they've heard so much about in the news lately;
And now it's affected your family.
We at Spectrum have been there. Spectrum is a parent-founded organization. We know all too well the emotional roller coaster that you are on and the intense feelings of "what are we going to do now?". Spectrum Intervention Group has been created to address this need in our community.
What is Spectrum Intervention Group?
Spectrum Intervention Group is a non-profit child care centre. In keeping with provincial regulations, we are licensed under the Day Nurseries Act of the Province of Ontario to provide education, including care and guidance of children who are diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We are governed by a Board of Directors comprised significantly of parents of children with ASD, experienced professionals in the field, as well as business people. As a federally incorporated registered charity, we are pleased to accept donations and issue tax receipts. Our mission is to provide quality services that are as affordable as possible to families through a combination of fees and fundraising.
Fundraising directly offsets some of the teaching/instructor therapist costs incurred in the delivery of Spectrum's programs. Effectively meeting the needs of the children we work with often means maintaining a very low staff to child ratio - typically either 1:1 or 1:2. Our experience has been that this low staff to child ratio, combined with our commitment to providing ongoing clinical training and supervision of our staff, are the key variables contributing to our success in delivering high quality programs based on ABA principles and procedures.
Spectrum's primary objective is to provide care and direct instruction, using ABA principles and procedures, to children with ASD, in order to increase their cognitive and social abilities in the home, school and community. ABA programs that take into account Skinner's analysis of verbal behaviour (commonly referred to as "VB programs"), are at the core of Spectrum's programs. Our knowledgeable and well-trained staff develop and provide individualized programs based on each child's needs. The teaching procedures used are evidence-based.
At Spectrum, our aim is always to help each child reach his/her potential. Our goals for each child enrolled in our intensive intervention programs, include an individualized combination of social, speech and language, cognitive, fine motor, gross motor, play and academic goals. Programs are delivered via individual, small group, or larger group instruction, depending on the needs of the child. Our ratio of staff to child is generally 1:1 or 1:2. Programming is closely supervised and staff is provided with on-going clinical training.
Spectrum is also committed to the education of both professionals and parents in the Autism community. To this end, we offer training workshops and seminars at least three to four times per year, geared to providing on-going education, on various topics related to autism. On-site training, practice and experience to students of the Autism and Behavioural Science Program at Algonquin College, child-care, developmental services worker, psychology and or related educational programs are also provided.
This website has been created to provide information about our organization, general information about autism and ABA, and useful links to other autism resources.
To register for any of our programs, you can download a registration form in PDF format, see "Programs and Registration Forms". You can also contact us by telephone at 613-723-0606 or by e-mail at info@spectrumig.com.
What Does Spectrum Intervention Group offer?
Services currently being offered by Spectrum:
INTENSIVE BEHAVIOURAL INTERVENTION
One to one intervention
Upon receipt of a signed contract, our staff will book a time to conduct an initial assessment with your child. This assessment is conducted by the senior therapist assigned to your child's program, and typically lasts approximately 90 minutes. The assessment consists of an interview with the parent, as well as direct probing of certain skills with the child by the senior therapist.
Based on the information gathered at the initial assessment, as well as our review of any documents/reports provided by parents (medical, speech, and/or occupational therapy), the senior therapist will complete the initial Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills Revised (ABLLS-R) and use that as the basis for developing the curriculum for the child's program. Program development is done in consultation with the clinical supervisor.
Generally a minimum of three sessions per week is required, and parents have the option of enrolling their child in either our three-session per week program, or our five-session per week program. However, our programs for school-age children can accommodate more flexibility in terms of scheduling of sessions.
Generally our morning shifts run from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., and our afternoon shifts run from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
If you would like to book a 30 minute appointment to get more information about our services, we welcome your phone calls at 613-723-0606, or feel free to contact us by e-mail at info@spectrumig.com.
Please contact our office at info@spectrumig.com for information as to the pricing for these sessions.

Fundraising News
2008: A world of thanks to;
Stonebridge Golf Course and Monarch Corporation for their generosity, the donation of one half the funds from their recent golf tournament is much appreciated.
Ottawa International Airport Authority/Project Clear Skies for their generosity in supporting the capital needs of our growing organization for the second year in a row.
and to all the individual donors who continue to support us directly and through the United Way.
2007: Thank you so much to the Microsoft Golf Classic for Autism for their very generous donation for the third consecutive year. Thanks also to the Community Foundation of Ottawa-Carleton and Project Clear Skies for providing their funding. We'd also like to thank the many individual donors for their contributions provided through the United Way campaign and through the Government of Canada workplace campaign that happens every fall.
2006: We are very pleased to announce that Spectrum Intervention Group has been chosen as one of 7 recipients to benefit from the 2006 fundraising efforts of Unity for Autism (www.unityforautism.ca). "Unity for Autism is a newly created foundation dedicated to providing financial assistance to registered charities which make a direct and profound impact on the development of individuals living with autism. Through a signature golf tournament held annually and corporate donations, our Foundation seeks to unite the corporate community across Canada in raising funds to address the crisis that exists for so many families waiting to access services..".
2005: With thanks to a generous grant from the Community Foundation of Ottawa-Carleton, Spectrum was pleased to offer its Summer Bridge program to ASD children again in the summer of 2005. This program is a much-needed service to the community as there are very few summer programs geared specifically to children with ASD. It runs half days for a full 8 week period in the summer. It has become more popular every year, we were proud to set aside a couple of weeks to serve a new age group of 12-15 year olds, for the first time last summer.
In both 2005 and 2004, Spectrum became the proud recipient of a large donation from the Ottawa Sens Foundation and the Annual Microsoft Golf Classic for Autism.. Our sincere thanks to all the sponsors for this event (for a complete listing, please visit www.ottawasenatorsfoundation.com. This event has been a huge success and it has raised over $60,000 annually for various autism organizations in our community. (To the best of our knowledge, this has been the biggest autism local fundraiser to date!) We would especially like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Rudy Sleiman and Steve Warne for all their hard work in making this event such a huge success. Congratulations gentlemen - you did an excellent job and you did our community proud!
