        "Your child has Autism."
    When parents hear these words they may:

  • not know what it is;
  • have an antiquated idea of rocking, silent children;
  • think to themselves that it's that "thing" affecting children that they've heard so much about in the news lately;

    And now it's affected your family.

    We at Spectrum have been there. We know all too well the emotional roller coaster that you are on and the intense feelings of "what are we going to do now?". Spectrum Intervention Group has been created to address this need in our community.

    What is Spectrum Intervention Group?

    Spectrum Intervention Group is a non-profit child care centre licensed under the Day Nurseries Act of the Province of Ontario to provide education, including care and guidance of children who are diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)r. Governed by a Board of Directors comprised significantly of parents of children with ASD, experienced professionals in the field, as well as business people, we are a federally incorporated registered charity.

    Spectrum's primary objective is to provide care and direct instruction, using ABA principles and procedures, to children with ASD, in order to increase their cognitive and social abilities in the home, school and community. ABA programs that take into account Skinner's analysis of verbal behaviour (commonly referred to as "VB programs"), are at the core of Spectrum's programs. Our knowledgeable and well-trained staff develop and provide individualized programs based on each child's needs. Programming is delivered consistent with the effective teaching procedures (such as developing instructional control, fading in number, effort and difficulty of demands, maintaining a quick pace, delivering reinforcement immediately, and teaching to fluency) noted in Dr. Vince Carbone's workshop series.

    At Spectrum, our aim is always to help each child reach his/her potential. Our goals for each child enrolled in our intensive intervention programs, include an individualized combination of social, speech and language, cognitive, fine motor, gross motor, play skills and academic skills. To this end, programs are delivered via individual, small group, or larger group instruction, depending on the needs of the child. Our ratio of staff to child is generally 1:1 or 1:2. Programming is closely supervised and staff is provided with on-going clinical training.

    Spectrum is also committed to the education of both professionals and parents in the Autism community. To this end, we periodically offer training workshops and seminars geared to providing on-going education, on various topics related to autism.. On-site training, practice and experience to students of child-care, developmental services worker, psychology and or related educational programs are also provided.

    This website has been created to provide information about our organization, general information about autism and ABA, and useful links to other autism resources.

    To register for any of our programs, you can download a registration form in PDF format, see "Programs and Registration Forms"You can also contact us by telephone at 613-828-0428 ext.29.      What Does Spectrum Intervention Group offer?

    Services currently being offered by Spectrum:

    INTENSIVE INTERVENTION PROGRAMS:

    JK/SK (4-6 year old) group program

  • Mon/Wed/Fri afternoons.

  • This is a full ABA/VB intervention program with at least one hour per session of one-to-one therapy with a trained instructor/therapist. It includes specific target goals that cover all target areas individualized to each child's needs. The ratio is 1:1 and data is taken on a daily basis. This small group setting, maximum of 8 learners, is an ideal setting to work on social, communication and play/leisure goals, as well as preparing students for school routines and group instruction. The one hour block of intensive 1:1 teaching generally will target other areas such as cognitive and fine motor.

  • This group is lead by Jackie Chretien, B.Ed. and includes 2 other certified teachers. All instructor/therapists are trained and have experience in delivering ABA/VB programs to children with autism. The child to staff ratio in this group is generally 1:1.

    One to one ABA/VB intervention:

  • Similar to an individual home ABA program, only in this case it is centre-based. After an initial assessment, we will match the needs of the child with one of our trained instructor/therapists. Close supervision by trained professionals is essential to ensuring a good quality/effective intervention program. Our programs are supervised by Senior Therapist, Jackie Chretien, B.Ed. as well as Clinical Supervisor, Lynne Thibodeau, M.Ed. You can read more about their extensive experience and qualifications by clicking on the "Staff" button.

    Fundraising News

    2006: We are very pleased to announce that Spectrum Intervention Group has been chosen as one of 7 recipients to benefit from the 2006 fundraising efforts of Unity for Autism (www.unityforautism.ca). "Unity for Autism is a newly created foundation dedicated to providing financial assistance to registered charities which make a direct and profound impact on the development of individuals living with autism. Through a signature golf tournament held annually and corporate donations, our Foundation seeks to unite the corporate community across Canada in raising funds to address the crisis that exists for so many families waiting to access services..".

    2005: With thanks to a generous grant from the Community Foundation of Ottawa-Carleton, Spectrum was pleased to offer its Summer Bridge program to ASD children again in the summer of 2005. This program is a much-needed service to the community as there are very few summer programs geared specifically to children with ASD. It runs half days for a full 8 week period in the summer. It has become more popular every year, we were proud to set aside a couple of weeks to serve a new age group of 12-15 year olds, for the first time last summer.

    In both 2005 and 2004, Spectrum became the proud recipient of a large donation from the Ottawa Sens Foundation and the Annual Microsoft Golf Classic for Autism.. Our sincere thanks to all the sponsors for this event (for a complete listing, please visit www.ottawasenatorsfoundation.com. This event has been a huge success and it has raised over $60,000 annually for various autism organizations in our community. (To the best of our knowledge, this has been the biggest autism local fundraiser to date!) We would especially like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Rudy Sleiman and Steve Warne for all their hard work in making this event such a huge success. Congratulations gentlemen - you did an excellent job and you did our community proud!

    Part of the donated funds from the Microsoft Golf Classic for Autism are currently being used, and funds will in the future be used, to directly offset some of the teaching/therapist costs incurred in the delivery of Spectrum's programs. Effectively meeting the needs of the children we work with often means maintaining a very low staff to child ratio - typically either 1:1 or 1:2. Our experience has been that this low staff to child ratio, combined with our commitment to providing ongoing clinical training and supervision of our staff, are the key variables contributing to our success in delivering high quality programs based on ABA principles and procedures.

    What parents have to say about our programs:

    Our son Nathan, attended Spectrum in 2003 and looked forward to it twice a week. He really enjoyed his time there thanks to the caring and committed staff.
    Chantal Clowater

    What can I say, Spectrum has changed our child's life. William is happy And learning. Boy is he learning!
    Lisa, parent

    ABA had been part of our family's lives for two years before our son started attending Spectrum. We found that taking therapy out of the home and into the class room setting, being with other children (asopposed to the constant one-on-one ratio) was very beneficial. Our son began learning all of the valuable skill sets required for school. Our experience with the centre was a truly wonderful one.
    Lyne Cousineau, parent.

    My 8 year-old attended Spectrum's Summer Bridge program in July and August of 2004. I really believe this helped make grade 2 an easier transition than the past 2 years in school. He now goes to school without flopping or running away from his aide.
    Debbie, parent
